The flora and fauna

TopElements of bio-geography

The Caras-Severin County has a special flora, and many species are either rare or have been declared natural monuments. Among these we can name: Zada, the Banat Black Pine tree (a relic of the Ice Age), the Turkish Hazelnut tree, the Banat Carthusian Pink, the White Carthusian Pink, the Globe Flower, the Forest Wild Rose, the Banat Wild Rose, the Beusnita brier, the Black Hawthorn, the Turkish Cherry Tree, the White Ivy, the Angelica plant, Urechea Ursului (Primula auricula), the Edelweiss, the Semenic Flower, the Fritillary, the Lent lilly, the Orris,  Paphiopedilum, the Sweet pea plant, Gladioli, the Yellow Crocus, etc.

The area of the Berzovia commune is located in the steppe, forest steppe and forest areas. Both grassy surfaces, as well as surfaces with different types of woods can be found in the commune area. The grasslands belonging to the steppe and forest steps areas occupy a small surface in the Gataiei plain, where unrestrained meadows have been replaced by crop fields. The small meadows are made up of Festuca sulcata, Festuca vvallesiaca, Festuca rubra, Cryosopogon gryllus, Bromus inermis, Poa bulbosa, Stipa capfilata, Stipa penata.

In the hilly area, on surfaces not occupied by farm lands or forests you can find unoccupied pastures made up of Trifofium repens (white clover leafs), Trifolium pratense (red clover leafs), Cynodon dactylon (couch grass), Plantago major (road weed), Achilfea millefofium (milfoil), Taraxacum officinale (dandelion), Matricaria chamonifia (chamomile).

Regarding the woodlands, the commune is located in the quarcineean subzone represented in the meadows and lowlands by Quercus robur (Oak Trees), on higher areas by Quercus cerr’is (ceo gi Quercus frainetto and sometimes by Durmast trees.

A special characteristic of the area is the presence in all the former forests of thermophilic species, especially Linden trees (Tilia tomentosa) which can be found on large surfaces.

In the plains area a very familiar presence is the Locus tree (Robinia pseudacacid), which either grew on its own or was planted as protective curtains or ant erosion plantations.

Other species of wood that can be spontaneously found are the Elm trees (Ulmus campestris), Common Ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior), the Common maple tree (Acer campestre), the Tarpan maple tree (Acer tataricum), the Harvest mite (Crataegus monogyma), the Sloe tree (Prunus spinosa) and sometimes the hazelnut tree (Corylus avellana).

In the Barzava plain and in its vicinity one can find a typical riverside coppice vegetation made up especially out of Water willows (Salix alba), Osier willows (Salix fragilis), Salix triandra, White poplar (Populus alba), Common alder tree (Ainus glutinosa), Comus Trees (Comus sanguinea). One can also find creepers among which Echinocystis lobată (Fam. curcubitaceae), Bumulus lupulus (hop plants) as well as bindweedvolburos (Calystegia silvestris) which covers the other plants like a net and sometimes suggests a subtropical scenary in the grass fields made up of Dutch rush (Scirpus maritimus) and reeds (Phragmites communis), alongside bulrush.

In the foliage forests one can spot natural monuments like the Fritillary (Fritillafla meleagris), some species if Iris flowers and some somewhat rare species like the lily of the valley (Convallana majalis).

The Fritillary and the Iris have been declared natural monuments and the area where they are found, more precisely the Berzovia Woods, has been declared a protected area.

The forests in the area have a very important role in protecting the rivers, the terrains, the soils and also serve a climatic and anti-pollution role, etc.

As a result of the measures taken by man to extend the agricultural lands, of the deforestations and of hunting activities, numerous changes occurred in the structure of the wild life. Despite this, it can still be mentioned that the local fauna is rich and diverse.
In the wooded area we can find fauna specific to foliage forests like hare (Lepus europeaus), foxes (Vulpes vulpes), wild boars (Suc scrofa), sqirels (Sciurus carolinens), and badgers (Mel Jes meles).

Among the bird species that can be found in the area we can mention:blackbirds (Turdus torquatus), pheasants (Phasianus colchinus), owls (Buho buho), starlings (Stumus vulgaris), nightingales (Luscinia megarhynchos), swallows (Hirundininae), wild ducks.
Barbell fish (Barbus barbus), dace (Leuciseus Cephalusl) and broadsnauts (Chondrostoma nasus) represent the species of fish commonly found in the area.

Mreana (Barbus barbus), cleanul (Leuciseus Cephalusl scobarul (Chondrostoma nasus) reprezintă speciile de pești care se găsesc în râurile din zonă.
